@eff I don't mean to be too critical, I love eff. However articles like this will leave less technical users a bit in the dark even considering the light checklist provided in the article or mention for users to look into their VPN provider.
A list of VPN companies that participate in open audits would be a good start, and maybe a few references to guides for encrypted DNS etc.
