@arstechnica Nothing new here, this is a failure mode that has impacted other automakers (Tesla - https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/inv/2022/INOA-EA22002-3184.PDF, https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/inv/2022/INCLA-EA22002-14498.pdf & https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/inv/2024/INOA-RQ24009-12046.pdf along with Ford BlueCruise - https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/inv/2024/INOA-PE24012-12041.pdf & https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/inv/2025/INOA-EA25001-10004.pdf).
What will be interesting is how the NHTSA decides to approach this, they'll have to make it up as they go here. Open source hardware and software that anyone can build and run is definitely a new area.
