@arstechnica As an "older" California resident who still has a POTS line, I've received a series of letters from AT&T trying to cajole me into replacing it with their Wifi service. Recently I got a letter telling me that AT&T will shut down my service on June 1, 2027, acting as if they already had approval. Last week, we experienced a lengthy PG&E power outage that outlasted my UPS's battery. Without a way to charge a cell phone or the copper line providing power, we would have no phone service.
