FCC abolishes gigabit speed goal, suggesting it is unfair to slower technologies
FCC decides 1Gbps is too fast, standard must be "technologically neutral." https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2026/08/fcc-abolishes-gigabit-speed-goal-suggesting-it-is-unfair-to-slower-technologies/?utm_brand=arstechnica&utm_social-type=owned&utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=social

@arstechnica I’ll take brain damaged governance for $500 Alex.
@arstechnica My brain short circuited just reading the headline.
@arstechnica gigabit with ethernet is way too slow (wifi much worse). I'd pay for faster if it was an option in my area. Wifi and bluetooth are terrible technologies that have only had micro-improvements over the last 25 years.
@arstechnica ahahaha, and I have gigabit FTTH for 15€, surfing feels instant sometimes. Several gigabyte downloads take only a few seconds. Of course everyone would want that and should have that.
@arstechnica
Harrison Bergeron is not the way to fair competition. Let the EU know as well.
@arstechnica laughing in 10GbE…
@arstechnica
That’s not funny!
@arstechnica and this is why I'm always frustrated when I'm in the People's Democratic Republic of America on a layover. In Korea, the slowest, SLOWEST, home internet plan from SK Telecom is 1Gbps. And just to rub salt in the wound, it works out to be about $10 american a month for that speed. Or you can pay $72 a month and get 10Gbps.
@arstechnica 😡
