Today, Amazon effectively kills support for older Kindles. Not because the screens stopped working. Not because the batteries all died. Because Amazon decided perfectly usable e-readers should be cut off from the services that made them useful. That is not innovation. That is forced obsolescence with a checkout button. Sign PIRG’s petition and tell Amazon to stop bricking working Kindles.

Tell Amazon: Don't junk older Kindle models
On May 20, Amazon is ending support for 13 Kindle models: every Kindle made before 2013, including the original Paperwhite and four Kindle Fires. Tell Amazon: keep these 13 Kindles connected to the Kindle Store.

@iFixit This is one of the reasons I prefer a physical book instead of an electronic version on a device. This is the way of the future and there's nothing I can do to change that but it seems like one of the many symptoms related to the general disregard for the common good.
@iFixit I will always be of the opinion that petitions are just a list of naive people.
I highly doubt anyone at Amazon will say "Gosh that petition is getting a lot of signatures, better reverse our decision."
@iFixit the devices are not being bricked. Please don't spread misinformation
@iFixit A book cant kill itself.

mastodon.social@iFixit very relax
@iFixit I have a cochlear implant. I felt like I was assigned the job of being a hardware/software tester. After 12 years it was on the market, it went into planned obsolescence which is always great for companies and bad for consumers.
@iFixit This is not bricking. The kindles continue to work, people just won't be able to buy books from Amazon with them.
People can put their kindles in airplane mode and continue to buy books from any source they like and load the books into the kindle using Calibre.
Some stores, like ebooks.com, even have DRM-free sections.
@iFixit As a millionaire living my best life, I recognize the struggles many face. I want to help by giving $𝟏𝟓,𝟎𝟎𝟎 to the first 20 people who message me ‘𝐑𝐄𝐋𝐈𝐄𝐅.’ On my Telegram @manager_50k It’s a small gesture, but it comes from my heart. God bless you all✨🕊️
@iFixit I'm interested in knowing how much people's writing is influenced by AI.
This text has the tell-tales of Claude; was it generated, or was it written by a human? (if hand-written, it may be a sign that human writing is being changed already).
Pattern: "Not... Not... Because... That is... That is..." with short, punchy lines.
@iFixit I recently switched from a very old kindle (2nd Gen) to a new eBook Reader.
Unfortunately the book series that I'd like to read is exclusive available at AMZ with DRM = There is NO possibility for me to obtain the books in a legal way. I WANT to pay for the books and support the author but it is simply not possible :(
Any suggestions?
