“We need a comprehensive federal privacy law that covers this sort of data collection and misuse,” EFF’s @Thorin told @verge. That means requiring opt-in consent, no deceptive design tricks, & data minimization that limits companies to only what’s needed to provide the service. https://www.theverge.com/tech/997682/every-tv-company-is-spying

@eff @Thorin @verge I've said it already, have the govs. mandate "data collection labels" like they do for energy comsumption...
@eff @Thorin @verge This would be a great front for a conspiracy to pirate tv shows and movies.
Hear me out: Hundreds of thousands of TVs all sending timestamped clips of TV broadcasts, can be collected and stitched back together using automated video processing techniques.
Someone tell the broadcasting industry. This warrants an investigation.
By mass trafficking TV content without the TV owner's and/or the copyright holder's consent, these TV manufacturers are gonna get trolled in court.
@eff @Thorin @verge Don't connect these devices to your network, use them as dumb screens for devices you control. If they won't function at all without being connected, return them for one that will. Have a backbone and resist.
