@Blender Well, I had been learning Blender.

Not anymore.

@Blender

I realize that this is just "accepting" money from Anthropic, with the implication (especially given your Funding Policy) that Anthropic won't get to dictate anything about Blender development.

It still looks EXTREMELY BAD to your userbase who, in a large number of cases (myself among them), are vehemently opposed to generative AI, and are specifically learning to do our own art as a 🖕 to Anthropic and their fellow purveyors of genAI technology.

Is their money really worth it?

@Blender

they are slaughtering you in the comments though...

Meme from the Fallout franchise I believe: a dialogue screen which says

"Everyone disliked that"

@Blender sucks

But let me use this thread to remind everyone that Mastodon recently accepted funding from Jeff Atwood of Stackoverflow, who happily turned over all of Stackoverflow data to the AI overlords while their developer community fumed.

Its sad but we're all complaining on a platform that's already tainted with billionaire money.

I don't write any original content here. I'm sure it will go to the AI training data mill at some point.

@Blender Really glad to see you guys dedicated to what matters, though I am unsure about the color choice!
#fundedbyplagiarism

Banner with white text "The Freedom to Create" on blue background with red handwritten annotations:
"dead school girls, don't worry, they were just Iranian" and subtitled with "#fundedbyplagiarism". Above the banner is a white strip with the Blender logo and the logos text edited to "blood money"

@Blender if I keep using 3.0 does that mean I can avoid all the AI bullshit or do I have to uninstall that version? Flogs

@Blender Developing a tool for creatives and then accepting money from a company that is not just evil but set out to systematically destroy the livelihood of creatives and creative thought in general is definitely A Choice.

@Blender you were supposed to be part of the solution, not part of the problem. there is no valid reason to make FOSS corporate controlled.

you've chosen the bad ending.

@Blender Imagine telling your boss you got bullied on that "other" social media site, just for said boss to be part of the corporate hive mind. Apparently the masses don't seem to like this idea very much. Yet in the eyes of marketing, it's a drop in the bucket compared to the other "more positive" social media sites that suckle on the tits of their corporate mother. If I were to choose a 3D Rendering program to use, this won't be my first choice anymore. Sorry, not sorry. Go home, you're drunk.

@Blender Five seconds of thought might have suggested this wasn't the best move.

@Blender Disappointing to read, not only as someone that taught Blender in several countries, broadly promoting it as a cultural good way back when the project was still building its audience.

Please understand there are no companies as culturally parasitic and destructive as Anthropic. It would be less ethically bankrupt to take money from a gangster.

It is painfully foolish to pretend this is anything akin to sponsorship.

RE: mastodon.social/@Blender/11650

Well, it's nice they can flinch, at least.

Blender's policy of "pay us and we'll whitewash you" is now cemented, but but at least they aren't CURRENTLY considering doing AI stuff, according to one suit who may or may not be lying or misinformed. Or, the AI that he told to write the letter is unable to be informed or tell the truth, as it is an AI.

We will see.

We hear your concerns around how Blender relates to AI topics. Here is an update regarding upcoming Blender Development Fund and AI Policies: https://www.blender.org/news/upcoming-blender-development-fund-and-ai-policies/ #b3d #DevFund

@Blender and also @fsiddi I am so happy with how you handled the Blender Development Fund and AI Policies. Thank you so much for listening to us.

@Blender We are so relieved. Thank you so much 🧡 💙 !

@Blender

“No generative AI functionality is currently available or planned to be integrated in Blender.”

This is why I’m here. Thank you and please just keep doing everything you’re doing.

@Blender @fsiddi I am disappointed to see that this announcement does not give scope to revise/strengthen the Funding Policy itself.

I'm glad to hear that you have heard people's "AI" related concerns, but (from the section of the community I intersect with) that seems to at most be equal with concerns about having provisions for excluding donations/support from companies who are not in alignment with the project and the community's values (including, but not limited to "AI" related orgs).
