Great Expectations by Charles Dickens is an early exploration of ‘romance fraud’
Although romance fraud is a 21st-century term, through the character of Havisham, Dickens clearly demonstrated its often-devastating effects.

I got hooked on Dickens after reading Robert Hughes' The Fatal Shore (about the history of Australia as a penal colony) which referred to this book, Great Expectations.
I had associated Dickens with sugary Disney sentimentalism, but the historical realism and strong story telling in the actual books came as a revelation.
I enjoyed this book a lot!
@sibrosan The Fatal Shore is on my TBR list 2011…. must read it some day. And I do love Great Expectations as well, great book imo.
