A detail most readings flatten: Kim's Teshoo Lama is specifically a Tibetan Buddhist — not "Buddhism" in general. Kipling came to the subject partly through his father's expertise and Edwin Arnold's "The Light of Asia." Different doors into what gets called one religion.
